The New York Association of Black Journalists celebrated Women’s History Month for a special day of wellness, finance advice, and wine. Thanks to sponsors Aviana Wine, Natures Garden US and Shea Creamery, fellow journalists circled up for a financial power talk with Diane King Hall followed by a Mindful Bodies and Reflective Practices spring pop-up experience presented by Chanon Judson, Co-Artistic Director of Urban Bush Women (UBW).
Diane King Hall kicked off the festivities giving her tips for saving money, the importance of an emergency savings account. She answered questions from attendees and reminded everyone the importance of knowing their finances and maintaining them.
Judson facilitated a wellness practice, part of UBW’s Builders, Organizers & Leaders through Dance series, otherwise known as BOLD, a program that offers a unique approach to facilitating a dialogue within an organization that’s offered in corporate spaces. The program has been at the forefront of activating the intersections of professional & community art-making, civic engagement, leadership, and group dynamics for over 20 years. Customarily, UBW facilitates multiple workshop possibilities for a variety of different groups and contexts from dance studio to board retreat, using a unique blend of dialogue and movement. In addition to Mindful Bodies and Reflective Practices, BOLD workshops also provide a Collaboration Lab, Dance for Every Body, EBX - Entering, Building, and Exiting Community, and Technique & Repertory.
Judson is one of two newly appointed Artistic Directors of Urban Bush Women, a performance ensemble currently celebrating its 40th anniversary that’s lauded for its use of cultural expression as a catalyst for change. Drawing on over two decades of deep knowledge as an arts educator, performer, and founder, Judson's philosophy is that the body is our first home. In stark comparison to deficit-based wellness trends that emphasize wellness comes from outside of our own sense of knowing, the heart centered wellness exercises and discussion Judson facilitated were strengths-based, culturally focused and touched on the role fascia—a thin casing of connective tissue—plays in our ability to release tension.
The overall event brought together women in media many who were able to learn more about skin care thanks to SheaCreamery, who offered natural handmade body sheas for all skincare needs. Enjoy an afternoon of bonding, learning and fine wine!
