DJ Mister Cee's passing on April 10, 2024, has had a profound effect on the hip hop community,
"On behalf of the Lebrun, Wilson, and Calixte families, we want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support for our brother, uncle, and nephew Calvin 'DJ Mister Cee' Lebrun in the wake of his untimely passing. It's a huge loss for our entire family, the borough of Brooklyn, and the entire Hip Hop Community,” said his family in a statement released to the press.
DJ Mister Cee, who died at age 57, grew up in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn, NY. He was highly instrumental in launching the career of The Notorious B.I.G. when he passed the late artist's mixtape to Matty C, a contributing writer for The Source. Matty C, in turn, gave the tape to Sean "Puffy" Combs, an executive at Uptown Records. As a result, Mr. Cee was given an executive producer's credit on Biggie's debut album, Ready To Die. The rest is history.
Mister Cee's untimely and unexpected death shocked his friends and fans worldwide, primarily since just a day before his passing, Mister Cee was heard actively promoting himself as a DJ and radio host for 94.7 The Block NYC. He was also excited about his upcoming gig, hosting 'The Set It Off Show' on Rock The Bells Radio for SiriusXM Radio. Mister Cee, aka "The Finisher," was renowned for playing hip hop's greatest hits and took pride in showcasing Biggie Smalls and Brooklyn's iconic artist, Jay-Z.
The unexpected death of Mister Cee has shaken the core of the hip-hop community. Numerous celebrities, including 50 Cent and his high school friend, Cold Chillin' artist Big Daddy Kane, have expressed their grief. Mister Cee was revered for his contributions to the culture, support of new talent, and jump-starting careers in the hip-hop industry.
At press time, it was stated that the official cause of death was diabetes related.
