Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network (NAN) celebrated the 34th Annual Triumph Awards, which also marked Rev. Al Sharpton’s 70th birthday.
The awards were held in New York on Sept. 30, 2024, at the Jazz at Lincoln Center Rose Theater. The festive event brought together members of NAN, supporters, and political officials in their best attire. Notable attendees included Rashida Jones, president of MSNBC; Michelle Miller, CBS News anchor; Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett; and actor Robert De Niro.
The Triumph Awards honor individuals who have made impactful contributions to social, racial, and economic justice. Against the backdrop of urgent civil rights issues and an election that could shape the future of our democracy, this year's ceremony assumed a particularly vital role. As the nation confronts the alarming rise of violent hate crimes targeting Black, Brown, Jewish, and AAPI communities, legislative measures aimed at undermining LGBTQ+ rights, and assaults on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, the significance of the Triumph Awards has never been more pronounced.
The night was filled with impactful speeches, a heartfelt medley of hits performed by Gladys Knight, and a sprinkle of politics from local and national figures.
The 2024 honorees included:
- Grammy Award-winning musician Gladys Knight
- Actor, producer, and director Robert De Niro
- Grammy Award-winning musician Wynton Marsalis
- Advocate and philanthropist Carolyn “Cookie” Mason
These honorees join a roster of historic leaders, entertainers, and advocates who have fought for a more just and equitable society, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Tyler Perry, Angela Bassett, Questlove, Leslie Odom Jr., Queen Latifah, and Spike Lee.
The night closed with a birthday serenade from the National Action Network board members to Rev. Al Sharpton.
