A new biographical film about Michael Jackson is drawing both anticipation and emotional reactions from audiences, particularly longtime fans of the late pop icon.

Michael, directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, premiered April 22, offering a sweeping look at the life and legacy of one of the most influential entertainers in music history.

For some viewers, the decision to see the film came with hesitation. Fans who closely identify with Jackson’s legacy expressed uncertainty about how the artist’s story would be portrayed — and whether any actor could capture his presence.

That skepticism began to shift with the casting of Jaafar Jackson, Jackson’s nephew and the son of Jermaine Jackson. His involvement helped build confidence among audiences hoping for an authentic and respectful portrayal.

The film traces Jackson’s life in a largely chronological format, beginning with the formation of The Jackson 5 in 1964 in Gary, Indiana. It depicts the group’s rise from a family band to international stardom, while also exploring the challenges they faced under the strict guidance of their father, Joe Jackson.

Central to the story is Jackson’s emergence as the group’s standout performer, setting the stage for his later solo success. The film also touches on family dynamics, including references to siblings such as Rebbie Jackson and La Toya Jackson.

The production features a cast portraying key figures in Jackson’s life and career. Juliano Krue Valdi plays a young Jackson, while Colman Domingo and Nia Long portray his parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson. Kendrick Sampson appears as music producer Quincy Jones, and Larenz Tate portrays Berry Gordy. Keilyn Durrel Jones plays Bill Bray, Jackson’s longtime confidant and bodyguard.

Early audience reactions describe the film as a high-energy portrayal that balances historical context with entertainment, revisiting some of Jackson’s most iconic moments and music.

While reactions vary, the film has sparked renewed interest in Jackson’s catalog and legacy, underscoring his enduring influence on global pop culture.
