Sunday, March 29, 2026 — In honor of Women’s Month, the New York Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ) hosted a special event titled “Love the Skin You’re In” at one of their favorite gathering spaces, Pubkey. The day was dedicated to pampering, networking, and celebrating the achievements of women within the organization and beyond.
The theme for the event was “Shades of Pink,” and it featured a variety of activities designed to promote self-care and empowerment. Nichole Stewart, a representative of Mary Kay, conducted skin analysis sessions where attendees downloaded an app that analyzed their faces to determine their skin types and suggest suitable products. Music from female artists such as India Arie, TLC, and Chaka Khan provided a vibrant backdrop, creating an atmosphere of sisterhood and celebration.

Guests enjoyed delicious bites from Pubkey as they connected with fellow NYABJ women, sharing stories and inspiration. The event highlighted the importance of self-love and community, especially during a month that celebrates women’s contributions across history and society.
Women’s History Month began as “Women’s History Week” in Santa Rosa, California, in 1978, organized by educators. President Jimmy Carter proclaimed it a week of recognition in 1980, but in 1987, Congress expanded the celebration to the entire month to honor women’s vast contributions. Since then, Women’s History Month has served as an important reminder of the progress made and the work still to be done in achieving gender equality.
Prominent leaders, including former President Jimmy Carter, President Joe Biden, and former President Barack Obama, have emphasized the importance of recognizing women’s achievements through annual events and legislative efforts. Obama once stated, “We must carry forward the work of the women who came before us and ensure our daughters have no limits on their dreams, no obstacles to their achievements, and no ceilings left to shatter.” Michelle Obama has also spoken about women’s power, saying, “When women show up, things change.”

Community organizations like NYABJ continue to play a vital role in promoting gender equality, peace, and progress. As NYABJ’s president, Mrs. Cynthia Horner, noted, “Women’s History Month is important because the accomplishments of women have never been recognized on the global stage as they should be. We still haven't elected a female president of the United States. Until we achieve true equality, we will keep fighting for our rights. This is what our ancestors fought for, and it’s what we must continue to fight for.”
The organization ensured that its female members experienced a moment of relaxation, with refreshments, good food, and pampering provided by Mary Kay facials hosted by Nichole Steward.

As the women left the event, they were inspired to continue illuminating the world with their light and shaping the future with purpose and intention. Members left the event with swag bags containing: Achea Redd: The Precipe of Mental Health
A La Glow: Lip Rescue Lip Rescue Balm
Groovy Deliciousness: Popcorn
Prozis: Energy Bars and Cookies
