According to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration honoring African heritage and culture, observed from December 26 to January 1. The holiday was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a response to the cultural disconnection experienced by African Americans.
