Doobie Powell is stepping into a new season one defined by healing, purpose, evolution and a deeper connection to his audience the artist known for his neo-soul, funk, and gospel roots has a new project.
In a recent conversation with AkilahTheGenius, Powell reflected on his musical journey, upcoming projects and the inspiration behind what he calls “The Perfect Remedy.”
Known for his dynamic vocals and genre-blending sound, Powell is entering a deeply personal chapter in his career, one that extends beyond the music itself. The Perfect Remedy is both the title of his forthcoming album and the theme of an upcoming tour, each rooted in a message of healing.
Powell said he began working on the project in 2024, though the direction did not immediately take shape.
“I was creating, but I didn’t have a specific direction,” he said. “As the songs were coming to me, I started to realize the theme was healing, in multiple senses of the word.”
That clarity came after completing a track titled “Remedy.”
“That’s when it clicked,” Powell said. “I realized, this is it.”
Shortly after finishing the album, Powell faced a life-threatening setback. Two weeks after completing the project, he suffered a fall that led to sepsis, a serious medical condition that required intensive treatment.
In a turn that mirrors the album’s message, Powell said his own music became a source of comfort during his recovery.
“Usually, I create and leave it where it’s at — I never go back and listen to my music,” he said. “But this time was different. My own music was healing to my soul.”
Powell has long been a respected voice in gospel and inspirational music, recognized for his vocal ability and genre-crossing sound. He is the son of Doobie Powell Sr., a founding member of The Sugarhill Gang, whose influence helped shape early hip-hop.
His background places him within a lineage of influential gospel families, often mentioned alongside groups such as The Clark Sisters and The Winans, whose contributions have shaped generations of the genre.
During the interview, Powell reflected on how that upbringing continues to inform his work, grounding him in both tradition and purpose. With The Perfect Remedy, however, he is pushing into new territory shaped by personal trials, spiritual reflection and a renewed sense of calling.
He also spoke about the longevity of his career, noting that he has released music for more than two decades. To mark that milestone, Powell is preparing a limited-edition gold signature vinyl release featuring a curated selection of songs that reflect his artistic journey.
“This is a big moment for me,” he said. “It’s about celebrating where I’ve been and stepping into the next phase.”
As Powell prepares to bring The Perfect Remedy to audiences through his upcoming tour, his message remains clear: healing is not only a theme in his music — it is something he has experienced firsthand.
With new releases, festival appearances and tour plans ahead , along with support from Nord Keyboards, Powell is entering a chapter defined by growth, resilience and purpose.
