The Rise of Jalen Brunson

When Jalen Brunson entered the NBA as a second-round pick in 2018, few could have predicted the magnitude and his impact just a few years later. Now a cornerstone of the New York Knicks and one of the most respected point guards in the league, Brunson’s rise has been anything but conventional. Still, it’s a story that embodies resilience, leadership, and a relentless work ethic.

Humble Beginnings and Championship Pedigree

Born and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Jalen Brunson grew up with basketball in his blood. His father, Rick Brunson, a former NBA player and coach, provided guidance and a strong foundation in the sport. However, it was at Villanova University where Jalen’s star truly began to shine.

At Villanova, Brunson was the heart and soul of two NCAA championship-winning teams in 2016 and 2018. Playing alongside teammates Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and Donte DiVincenzo, Brunson emerged as a clutch leader, known for his poise, smart decision-making, and relentless work ethic. Together, they led one of the best college basketball teams of the 2010s, winning the national championship in both 2016 and 2018. Their bond extended beyond the court—a brotherhood built on trust and shared dreams.

When it was time to declare for the NBA Draft, Brunson had an impressive portfolio: he was a consensus First Team All-American, the National College Basketball Player of the Year, and the recipient of the Bob Cousy Award (given to the best point guard in the nation). He was also named Big East Player of the Year, a two-time First Team All-Big East selection, and a member of the Big East All-Freshman Team. Additionally, his jersey number was retired by the Villanova Wildcats.

The Dallas Days: A Star in the Making

Despite his college dominance, Brunson fell to the second round in the 2018 NBA Draft, selected 33rd by the Dallas Mavericks. There, he played a supporting role behind Luka Dončić, gradually proving his value. His breakout came during the 2022 NBA Playoffs, where he dropped 41 points against Utah in Dončić’s absence and helped the Mavs reach the Western Conference Finals. Brunson’s ability to rise under pressure made it clear: he was ready to lead and quietly developed into one of the league’s most dependable guards.

Changing the Narrative in New York

In the summer of 2022, after his father joined the Knicks' coaching staff, Brunson signed a four-year, $104 million contract with the team. This move was significant, as Jalen's signing marked a turning point for the franchise. Brunson made an immediate impact on the team. In the 2022–23 season, he led the Knicks to their first playoff series victory since 2013, disproving critics and establishing himself as a legitimate star. However, his best performance was yet to come. During the 2023–24 season, Brunson averaged 27.8 points, 6.7 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game. His outstanding play earned him his first NBA All-Star selection, and he finished 10th in MVP voting. Additionally, he set multiple franchise records, including the most 40-point playoff games in a single postseason, solidifying his role as the go-to closer the Knicks had long needed.

After a stellar campaign, Brunson entered the 2024–25 season with heightened expectations and he certainly delivered. With a full offseason of preparation and a revamped roster, the Knicks emerged as genuine title contenders.

The franchise made its boldest move in decades by acquiring four-time All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns in a three-team deal involving the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Charlotte Hornets. In the process, the Knicks parted ways with Donte DiVincenzo, a key member of their Villanova brotherhood. However, this trade signaled a win-now mentality for the team. Brunson quickly developed strong chemistry with Towns while continuing to serve as the heart and soul of the squad. Ultimately, the trade proved to be a win-win for both the Knicks and the Timberwolves.

Brunson had a career-best season, averaging 29.3 points, 7.2 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. He earned his second consecutive All-Star selection, finished in the top five for MVP voting, and consistently rose to the occasion during crunch time. Under his leadership, the Knicks finished near the top of the Eastern Conference and entered the playoffs with genuine championship aspirations.

In the postseason, Brunson elevated his game even further, scoring over 40 points in multiple games, including a remarkable 46-point performance to close out the second round. The Knicks reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000, energizing fans and turning Madison Square Garden back into the epicenter of basketball.

Despite their momentum, the Knicks fell short in a tough seven-game series against the Indiana Pacers, led by Tyrese Haliburton and their fast-paced offensive strategy. Brunson battled through injuries in the later games of the series, showcasing his heart and grit. Unfortunately, the depth and shooting of the Pacers, along with Haliburton's impressive play, proved too much to overcome.

Although the season ended in disappointment, it was undeniably a breakthrough year for both the Knicks and Jalen Brunson. From being a second-round pick to becoming a franchise cornerstone, Brunson's journey has emerged as one of the league's most inspiring success stories. With a core group of Towns, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and Julius Randle returning, the Knicks are far from finished. This is just the beginning.
